The collection depot is open to residents and businesses** in the following District towns: Brattleboro, Brookline, Dover, Dummerston, Guilford, Halifax, Jamaica, Marlboro, Newfane, Putney, Readsboro, Somerset, Stratton, Townshend, Vernon, Wardsboro, Westminster, and Wilmington.

**Businesses, schools, and institutions that generate less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month can participate but must register in advance. Please go to this page to register.

(Appointments are recommended for larger loads or unknown items) To make an appointment for our HHW Depot, or get more information, please call 802-257-0272 extension 117 during regular business hours. There is a $10 fee per resident per 5-gallon load- (gallons of latex & oil paints/stains are excluded from the count).

This is your opportunity to clean your attics, basements, garages, closets, and cabinets of nasty chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and other products that should NOT be thrown away in your regular trash.  No access sticker is required for HHW drop-offs.

Do not get in the scale line, please look to the left as you enter, and pull through the orange cones, and an employee will come to your vehicle and help unload. We appreciate cash or check payment at the time of drop-off. There will be a $10 charge per load, per 5-gallon total. If you bring over 5 gallons (excluding paints/stains/polyurethanes) we will need to charge you accordingly.

What is Household Hazardous Waste?

HHW spray cans HHW 1 pesticide containers

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) can be identified by keywords on the container label: danger, warning, caution, flammable, caustic, poison, and skull and crossbones. The container may also describe the health or environmental hazard of the product by using the following words: flammable, combustible, poison, caustic, and irritant.
Not all household cleaners are hazardous and can be thrown out in your regular trash. Read the labels! Non-toxic products, eco-green cleaners, and biodegradable cleaners are trash.

The following materials are banned from the landfill and must be brought to our Hazardous Waste Collection Depot and/or event. (Empty containers of hazardous materials are trash and should be disposed of properly, but never recycled)

  • Acids (Hydrochloric, Muriatic, etc.)
  • Adhesives
  • Aerosol, acrylic, auto paints–(spray paint, rubber undercoating)
  • Ammonia
  • Antifreeze
  • Bleach
  • Brake fluid
  • Car wax & polishes
  • Chemistry sets
  • Cleaners/spot removers
  • Diesel fuel
  • Drain & toilet cleaners
  • Driveway sealer
  • Fertilizer (chemical)
  • Fuel additives
  • Gasoline (old, contaminated, unused, mixed
