Motor Oil (Used)- Clean or dirty

| A-Z Disposal Guide

Used motor oil is banned from Vermont landfills. Effective 10/1/24, used motor oil is NO LONGER collected daily. An access sticker is NOT required; however, there will be a fee. Oil can only be dropped off on Tuesdays; we will not accept motor oil any other day of the week. Please bring your motor oil, good or bad, to the Hazardous Waste Depot on Tuesdays (8:30-10:30 AM). After 10:30, please go to the scale house to drop it off until 3 PM.  (Hazardous Waste Depot is closed November-May, but oil will still be accepted at the scale house on Tuesdays).

Ensure your oil is being dropped off in a container(s) with a closed lid. No open buckets or drain pans full of oil will be accepted. If possible, please return the oil to its original containers.

Oil received in compromised containers (bleach, antifreeze, windshield washer bottles, etc.) will be determined dirty upon drop-off*

Acceptable oils: motor oil, hydraulic oil, heating oil, two-cycle oil, gear oil, or machine oil.

WSWMD will collect clean oil (free of contaminants, unopened containers, etc., freshly changed oil not exposed to any elements) for $1 up to one gallon. (larger quantities will be billed accordingly)

*Dirty or contaminated oil disposal fee is $10 up to 1 gallon.  This includes oil mixed with other automotive fluids such as antifreeze or gasoline, exposed to the elements, heating oil sludge, or contaminated with leaves, dirt, water, or other contaminants. We cannot burn dirty oil in the waste oil furnace, so it must be disposed of with other hazardous wastes, which is very expensive.

Oil filters cost $.50-$1 each to drop off. Please bring them to the scale house during regular business hours as there are no restrictions on recycling oil filters.
