Convenience Center/Scalehouse


The WSWMD's Convenience Center consists of:

  • a transfer station that accepts non-recyclable solid waste and construction and demolition (C&D) debris
  • a Swap Shop for reusable items (open Saturdays only)

Convenience Center/Scalehouse Hours

The Convenience Center/Scalehouse located at 327 Old Ferry Road in Brattleboro, VT has new hours. Starting March 1, 2016 we are open during the following hours:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday: 7:00 am - 3:00 pm                                     Wednesday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm                                                                                  Saturday: 8:00 am - 1:00 pm                        

The Convenience Center is closed on Sundays.

Access Stickers

Access stickers are valid for one year beginning July 1st, through June 30th of each year. These stickers let you use the facility for all of your recycling and solid waste needs. The cost is $35 each and may be purchased at the scalehouse. You will still need to pay for your disposal costs but you will be allowed to write a check, pay with cash, or credit card. There is a 3% fee to use a credit card.

Day Pass

If you need to use the facility for one day, you may purchase a day pass for $10.00 - it is good for the entire day. You will still need to pay for disposal costs. You can pay with cash or use a credit/debit card - 3% will be added if you use a credit or debit card. We do not take checks unless you have an access sticker.

The following table lists many of the items accepted at the WSWMD Convenience Center and their cost, if applicable (items with an *(asterisk) are banned from landfill disposal - they must be brought to WSWMD and kept separate from household trash:

We have a Swap Shop on site where items can be brought for swap - either passed on or picked up to bring home. For more details, check out the Swap Shop link on the Main Menu to your left. Swapable items are free - if they are good enough for family or friends, they are good enough for us!

Access stickers:

Access stickers are valid for one year beginning July 1st, through June 30th of each year. The sticker lets you access the facility for all of your recycling and solid waste needs. They cost $35.00 each and can be purchased right at the scalehouse at the facility when you bring trash. You may bring your sticker with you when you come to WSWMD. It does not have to be affixed to your vehicle.

No prorated stickers will be sold. We also sell a day pass for $10.00 - it is good for one day.

Note: The following hazardous waste products are collected on Old Ferry Road, year 'round, daily for residents only. We cannot accept the following waste from businesses at the Convenience Center:

  • used motor oil (non-contaminated, fresh from the engine, no gas or water or antifreeze mixed in)

  • latex paint, oil-based paint, shellacs, lacquers, varnishes, enamels, stains, urethanes, aerosols, waterproofing, metal coatings, rust preventatives, and field and lawn paints

  • rechargeable batteries and lead-acid batteries

  • button cell batteries (NiCd, Zinc, etc.), alkaline batteries

  • thermostats & thermometers that contain mercury

  • used medical needles

  • fluorescent light bulbs & ballasts

  • computers, televisions, and cell phones

Materials Banned from Vermont Landfills

The following items have been banned from Vermont Landfills and must be properly disposed of through your solid waste district, town transfer station (if an accepted item) or a permitted waste hauler:

  • Any Hazardous Waste 
  • Appliances/White Goods - air conditioners, boilers, dehumidifiers, diswashers, dryers, freezers, furnaces, hot water heaters, microwaves, refrigerators, stoves, trash compactors, copiers, washers & water coolers.
  • Batteries - Button cell, lead acid (car batteries) & rechargeable (nickel-cadmium, Nickel-metal-hydride, lithium-oin).  Regular alkaline batteries are disoposed of in with your trash. 
  • Dangerous Wastes - Explosives, fireworks, sharps, medical waste, & propane cylinders & liquid waste.  
  • Electronics - Answering machines, computers (monitors, peripherals), CRT containing divices, DVD players, E-device power cords, and chargers, electronic game consoles (Xbox, Playstation, Gameboys, etc.), fax machines, PDA's (and other personal e-devices), printers, stereo equipment, telephones, televisions, wireless phones & VCRs.
  • Mercury-Added Products - fluorescent bulbs & tubes, thermometers, therostats, etc.
  • Paints, stains, varnishs & thinners - Latex and oil based paints. This also includes paint thinner, paint remover, stains & varnishes.  Please see our Paint Collection Program
  • Recycables - Plastics #1 and #2, glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans and aluminum foil, cardboard, mixed paper, and newspaper.
