Windham Solid Waste - About Us
The WSWMD is a public entity formed by charter through the State of Vermont in 1988. It is comprised of 19 towns who have joined together to cooperatively manage their solid waste in rural southeastern VT. Presently, the WSWMD manages the only publicly owned and operated Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in VT.

“The District's mission is to provide solid waste education, recycling management, and disposal services for its member towns and other entities, as the need arises."

History

The WSWMD was formed in 1988. At that time, only eight towns were members of the District. These towns cooperatively managed a 30 acre landfill.

In 1995, federally mandated landfill operation regulations forced WSWMD to seek alternative landfill sites or an alternative to landfill disposal. After much debate, WSWMD opted to get out of the landfill business and start recycling.

Member Towns

Nineteen towns are currently members of WSWMD. The town populations range from 216 to 12,046. Each town appoints a representative to serve on the Board of Supervisors for the District.

Board of Supervisors

The Board of Supervisors meets at 7:00pm at the WSWMD Conference Room, 327 Old Ferry Rd, Brattleboro, on the second Thursday of the months of January, March, April, May, June, August, September, October, November, and December. There is one representative and one alternate from each member town.
